I don't have time to read the entire thread so if this was mentioned forgive me. To the issue of surface swimming not working the leg entirely. Do most of your laps underwater coming up only to breathe. This will be two fold, conditioning both your legs and your lungs, your ablity to hold your breath while working will be increased this could be of great value someday. You'll be moving yourself thru the water and using 02 from your blood this should increase your bodies ability to deliver 02 over time. Time is the key you need to be consistant over time with your workouts to show results. The older one gets the longer that period of time becomes by the way. Good luck.
