I recently got certified to dive open water but my wife is not. I would like for us to go on a mini vacation so I could dive. However, I don't want to leave her at the hotel and i don't have a buddy? Has anyone experienced this? If so what to do?

If you are going near the ocean you can go out on a charter... and tag along with someone or a group on the boat and as you dive. Someone on board will let dive with them. As far as the wife goes, if you want to dive, she may be stuck at the hotel or at least on her own somewhere. If you go shore diving and can hook up with a group of divers she can hang out at the beach while you dive.

Or better yet, get her certified!! :) That solves both issues!

As far as not having a diving buddy goes this is rarely a problem. My GF does not dive so it does make things a little diffcult, I always want to go somewhere where I can dive during holiday periods, she doesnt care so much. Its a compromise, often we will go somehwere hot, I will try to dive in the mornings only and then we can spend the rest of the day together, she is not an early riser so this works out fine. Liveaboards are only possible if I am on holiday solo. Have been trying to get her into diving without much success so far, she is a little scared of drowning as she is not a good swimmer. Try to convince your wife to take up diving. I think its a great hobby for couples to share. Couples who play together stay together (sometimes). Good luck.

She would like it but she is a cancer survivor and has had restrictive surgeries that physically will not allow her. Plus she is claustrophobic :)

My wife too is claustraphobic and has high blood pressure, so no diving. We have no problems with my diving because our trips South are usually for 2-3 months. My diving is once a week at most, same as here at home. On a shorter trip, I may just do one or 2 days of diving--say a 2 week trip. There is lots of time to do stuff together. Her thing is Texas Holdem, so we both go to the casino and one of us usually makes money (not the diver). Then there's always the beach and a good book if you're on a charter. For me, worrying about what type of buddy I get on the boat is more of a concern.

Wow Tm Im beginning to think we have alot more in common then I first thought. My girlfriend is very claustophobic too so she does not dive plus she just doesnt like to get out in the water much. She too loves to spend some time in the casino so I have to use the narcosis as a way of getting to drunk to care about how much damage she has done :shakehead:

LOL I too try to make things right with her through my absence while she struts through town and so forth but its a very awkard situation for sure but youll learn to get around it.

One of the things that's worked well for me is taking Caribbean cruises, I'll pick a port or two where I'd really like to dive and on the other ports we are doing whatever my wife wants to do.

Also traveling to a place that's got more to do than just diving works well. For example, South Florida! (Shameless plug warning):D

Maui is pretty nice for a couple like you guys. If you stay in the Kihei area, you can go out with the B&B boat, which leaves at 5:30 am; by the time you're back, about 11 or so, your wife will have gotten up and had a cup of coffee, and will be ready to tackle whatever other fun things you two want to do with your day.

For a mini vacation, just drive on down south a little ways to Florida. In PCB you could dive the jetties while she lays on the beach right near you. If you can get away theres tons of charters to choose from. Destin would be about the same. This would probably be cheaper than a cruise especially if your looking for something just for a few days.

Thanks guys. Once you think of it, your only diving for a couple hours then your back. can't wait to try some of the suggestions.
