I am wanting to become an ow instructor, and was wondering how many dives you need to start the class, it will be an sdi class. Do they require you to be a dive master.

Yes, you'll need to become a divemaster, then you can either move on to Asst. Instructor or jump to Instructor.

I believe all agencies require DM or equivalent prior to instructor. As far as number of dives prior to start of class - at least enough to be a DM, which is 60 with PADI. PADI then requires you to have 100 dives before attending the examination. I believe most agencies are similar in their requirements.
