We start all our OW students in wetsuits, and they wear a 7 mm full suit and a 7 mm core warmer with an integrated hood. It DOES impede mobility, and takes a lot of weight to sink!
I dove like that for a year in Puget Sound. Didn't have enough money for a drysuit as an Army medical intern.
Now, if its too cold for my 5 ml (about 74 degrees or less), I'm going to wear my drysuit. The only time I really don't like the drysuit is when it's really, really hot outside and the water is cold. But, still I go with the drysuit if at all possible, unless the air temps are in the 105 range or above. Then, usually the water is warmer, if I stay above the thermocline, at least.
