On the first dive, my computer read 75. On the second dive, 65. Go figure.... Anyway, I am giving a "yes, maybe" to Jocassee next weekend. I can only make it Sat. though. Work gets in the way Sun. Let me know & I'll plan accordingly. Anybody else?

Dove Jocassee 3 weeks ago...75 degrees on the junk. I went over the wall and down to 172 ft. My how things change! A very dark 52 degrees!

Planning on being there around 1:30 or 2:00 pm on Saturday and maybe again on Sunday. Anybody know what the temps are right now?

If anybody is going to be there then let me know and we can try to meet for a dive.

Hi plsdiver4377 and Scubaboy44.
I will be at the Hot Hole on Friday Oct 24 after lunch and then again on Saturday Oct 25. Bring you group and boat and I will help you learn the currents there if you like. The temps should be in the 80s if the units are running. I think one is still down so we will have some cool water in bursts. Other than that it is a joy ride that is a drift.

I am in Greenville and have heard about this Hot Hole. Where is this anyway? It sounds interesting. Anybody who has any info on where and what this is exactly would be greatly appreciated. How close is it to Greenville because I am anxious to get in the water as soon as I have transportation. Thanks. :)

Hi Nature diver,
The Hot Hole is off Hwy 183 coming from Pickens, SC (toward Hwy 130). If you take your boat into the Warpath Landing(on the right, Hwy 183) it will allow you to launch directly across from Duke Power Oconee Nuclear Station Power Plant. The trip to the site is just 3-5 minutes to cross the lake.

The water is now in the range of 82 degrees for most of the site. It is the warmest water to dive locally for the rest of the season. It is an Advanced level dive site for diving skills because of the currents there and the under water terrain. The dive itself is a blast to do since it pushes you out into the main stream of discharge water that is heated by the nuclear power plant. Understanding the currents and how to dive it the first time from another diver is a great advantage so find someone like my self or another from Greenville to dive it with you. It has a double set of currents, one clockwise and one counter-clockwise. There is a cofer dam under water and a hard blown bottom full of rock where the hot water comes across. The fish just love this spot so you will have lots of company.

The rules are that no divers do a walk in from land and that no divers come out any shallower than waist deep on the edge of the water. Climbing out will ensure that the camera trained on you will send an officer down to escort you away. With those few rules in mind, it is a great dive site by boat only.

I have been diving the site for 10 years and love to go and play there periodically for drift dives and the hot water when I choose not to wear the dry suits. In the winter be prepared to stay warm once you exit the water. Most of the time I would rather be in the water staying warm.

Currently 2 units are moving cooling water( warm water from the reactor) so it is very comfortable. When all three are running then it is much more consistant in temperatures throughout. Right now you may find cool spots and very warm spots as we did with the classes taught there over the last few weekends.

So how do I sign up for this dive?

Colin, ND...I can pick you up on the way.

Isn't there a junk in Jocassee as well?

Colin Berry

If we want to plan some kind of dive in the Hot Hole I would love to attend. I don't have a boat or a car at the moment but I have dive gear and have been out of the water for three months now. Let me know a date if someone's got a boat and knowledge of the area and I'll see what I can do to go. I miss the water!

I would also like to do a hot hole dive. If we can't talk Samantha into it :) we could always look into an off the wall charter dive to it.

if you guys are planning a dive @ the Hot Hole. Reese @ Bermuda Triangle has a pontoon he uses for students & sometimes a group that just wants to dive. But the way the weather has been he may want to wait for colder air temps. He told me that the best time to dive the Hot Hole is when it is in 50s-60s. Either way, I'm in. NatureDiver, I can give you a ride if you need one. I'm just across town & you're on the way. Lets get this going!
