A caution to all Divers and travellers going to Africa for vacations, Mozambique in particular.

I will not go into the sordid details of what happened to this young 20 year old girl except to say it was an unnecessary death if a few basic guidelines were followed.

I have extensive travel experience in Africa. For the past 17 years I have worked in African countries as an expat and have had friends die due to not following advice. Just recently in Ghana, a young friend, 26, Nick Udal, passed away as a result of poison spiked drink and our other friend with him survived after some time in hospital.

Due to the nature of touring Africa, safety, the cultural and religious diversity, political turmoil, natural diseases, infections and personalities you might encounter, I would strongly recommend the following guidelines to at least minimize the risks to yourselves and others in your groups:
All laws, rules and regulations of the countries visited shall be adhered to at all times.
No activity will be done without prior assessment of the risk of said activity by the Tour Leader or group.
Any excursions into the bush, villages, towns or ocean shall be done in groups only.
When leaving your camp area the group shall report to the Camp Manager with the following information: Destination, Mode of transport, Expected time of return, a national policeman escort and a cellular phone with camp contact number.
Call camp when destination is reached. Call camp when leaving destination to camp.
When frequenting a local pub, bar or night club, a national policeman shall accompany the group.
When consuming alcohol outside of the camp area, the group or an individual within group, shall not become incapacitated as a result of alcohol. It causes problems for others in the group.
When consuming alcohol outside of the camp area, the group or an individual within group, will pay for each round of drinks as they are delivered to your group. Do not run a bar tab.
When consuming alcohol outside of the camp area your drink shall be sealed and opened in front of you or opened by you. Do not leave drinks unattended.
When leaving the camp area to go local shopping or pub crawling, take only the cash you think you might need, in local currency. Put it in your front denim pocket.
You will have many “friends” on your travels. Do not invite “friends” to your camp area or lodgings for any reason.
Africa has a high HIV infection statistic. Need I say more?
Malaria is endemic to most countries in Africa; hence, malaria prophylaxis is recommended. Consult Diving Doctor on which prophylaxis meds are suitable for diving.
Mozambique is going through some Renamo rebel against Frelimo Government activity. Several incidents have involved attacks on civilians and public transport. Check travel advisory of countries on your trip.
It is long-winded but if it helps someone it was worth it.

Also try and meet up with a trusted local, could be someone on SB, to travel with in their home country.

Safe travels and diving.

Thanks for posting the awareness & words of caution. RIP to her.

Since you mentioned it here, what kind of diving accident was it?

I almost went diving in Pemba, Mozambique by mistake as I made diving travel arrangement after hiking up Kilimanjaro 2 years ago. I was planning to dive in Pemba, Tanzania. I thought there was only 1 Pemba in East Africa at the time.

Doing a little research online, and seems this wasn't a diving accident. More of a 'central africa is still a very dangerous place to be' kind of thing :( Sad.

She was murdered in Mozambique while traveling alone. Not sure why "Africa" is the danger here. I would not let my daughter travel alone in Vietnam, Colombia or India. But that's hardly a reason to brush a continent the way you have. I've traveled to South Africa, Botswana and Tanzania many times over the past few years and never felt any danger "difference" in any of those countries.

Your advice applies to any country not an entire country. Not sure why the word diving appears in the title either? What exactly happened here?

According to the news which I read online she was not even at a diving tour. She also dived during the period that she was at Mozambique but the main purpose of being there is not diving. Who knows why the Newspaper released with a header like this.

Very few safe places to explore in africa, folks with more time and money than sense will always find crazy places to die.

I would never go to Africa to dive, except to maybe do the Sardine run and the Red Sea

I'm sure that the OP would agree with you...not exactly the best diving destinations.

I agree that not all of Africa is like this and the precautions above apply to any person in any country. I was just bringing attention to the fact that although one is on vacation, it is not "care-free".
I love this continent and do not want to discourage traveling here. We who live here are aware of the small things I posted above. Some folks are not aware, hence the precautions. One need not follow all to a 'T", but use it as a guideline as suggested.

Where are you from Shaun? Your risk analysis and management plan seems to me you do not travel and dive independently. Glad I took my own advice and used my own set of risk mitigation strategies while sleeping on beaches in Madagascar earlier this year for an afternoon nap.

I feel there's a hidden undercurrent of "It was her fault" she was raped and murdered and her body found in a toilet at the camp in your post and that is offensive.

She contacted her father and said she was scared prior to her death. No one deserves that. She was on a backpacking and diving trip. How do you know she was drinking or partying or sleeping around? Put forth your evidence as you obviously feel you have some.

I am a female traveller usually solo however in Madagascar I had a female dive buddy join me not to keep me safe but to see how I liked travelling with someone else. I find your suggestion of taking a local policeman with you absolutely ridiculous - TIA Police are as corrupt as anyone else for the main part. I found the local wanna be village gangsta much more helpful than the police ever would have been. In fact I avoided the police after one demanded my phone number, where I was staying and a dinner date (yes, that was partly my fault for giving him a kiss on the cheek after he wished me happy Valentine's Day). Lesson learned.

If you know something concrete speak up and cut the innuendo.
