I tend to disagree. I would recommend the below as they worked great for me getting into diving:

Hog D1 regs (2) *new*
Used wing and backplate (DSS or halcyon or something like that)
Shearwater petrel dive computer if you can buy used do it
Pressure gauge *new*

I don't like jacket style bc's.

The biggest point for me was that get new regulators and new pressure gauges and everything else you can get new. If you want to save money you should probably stay away from aqualung. Although they do well for products you don't get all that much additional "value".

Alright... Here is another piece of advice.

Done.

What harness do you have?

What harness do you have?

A one pc harness is a one piece harness. $125 is outlandish for it. It's basically 3-4 stainless steel d-rings with retainer clips, a stainless buckle, some bike innertube, a crotch strap, and possibly a cut off steak knife in a webbing sheath. Add a length of 2" stiff webbing and you are done.

Skip the Apeks/AL stuff and go for DSS. A single setup with everything you need will run $470 new. Cheaper if you find someone dumping one used

In terms of regs. Deals can be had:

I see you live in FL.... is a steel backplate the best choice for you? How least, normal and most lead you wear at your various dive sites?

Dive Gear Express has a BP/W combo for $300. Add steel for $20. It's not clear that it includes a LP inflator (usually does but.... +$20)

The Hollis DG03 computer is $250 +$20 for the DSS bungee mount.

A Hog single tank package with DIN/Yoke will set you back about $550. If you are OK with a more basic recreational setup you could drop that to $350 for an Aeries package over at ScubaToys. Of course don't forget to check out used options. Sometimes you'll find a good deal on a ScubaPro MK20/25 set.

So that's $1140. Just a wee bit cheaper. :)

BTW, this is my rig: http://www.diverightinscuba.com/catalog/techequipmentpackages-drisdivegear-28lbbpwsystem-p-3070.html I use the basic Light Monkey harness. I also have a generic AL plate and webbing from Dolphin Scuba. I dive mostly fresh water with AL and Steel tanks so I change things around depending on what I'm doing. I avoid wearing a weight belt whenever possible.

I think the things you listed are way over priced. I do like that you are looking at a BP&W but my personal preference leans toward Halcyon or Deep Sea Supply

As far as saving money by buying the right stuff from day 1 here's a couple of helpful charts i found on Bitz diving. Looks like the owner finally let the site die (not online anymore :( ) but fortunately theres the archives on the web.

So everyone pretty much agrees that just a basic harness which is roughly under 100$ is the way to go versus buying like the full harness with backpads and such that run upwards of 300-400$? I just feel like the basic harness with the metal backplate right on your back would be uncomfortable, no?

I can testify it's not uncomfortable. I've done several dives in Lake Travis with nothing but swimtrunks and booties for my fins on. I had to hump my rig down the cliff side into the water and it was perfectly comfortable. Properly adjusted I have no trouble getting in and out of the rig. I see no reason for all the extra failure points in more complex harnesses. I too used to think people were FOS claming this but they aren't.

PS- I dive Hollis F1's but checkout the Hog tech fin for $59 at http://www.divegearexpress.com/other/bargain.shtml

Also the Hog tech mask (in my profile pic ) is a good, affordable mask.

PSS- still wondering if steel is best for you

I have tryed/used both.. ended on comfort harness! :)

Alright, now what is the real difference between brands for wings? I am set on wanting a donut wing but does brand really make a difference here?

Just put things in correct perspective, the $300-400 full harness with backpad does NOT require a backplate to funtion, your tank just strap onto the harness. The basical harness does requre a backplate. Still, under $100 for basic harness is an understament. Generally, they are under $50. Even Halcyon (which to a lot of people is a very over priced brand) is $71. As for comfort, once in water, you won't notice any differences. In fact, basic harness with backplate may even be more comfortable because the stability. If you are hiking with your rig, then yeah, harness with padding helps
