That is indeed a risk with free diving, but doesn't fit with the story as reported in post #1 - or any other info given here.

Yeah, it was kind of just food for thought. Seeing nothing in the story that specifically ruled SWB out, I brought up the possibility since nobody mentioned it yet. Maybe you're aware of something that ruled out SWB? If so, please share, I'm still learning.

I am not at all experienced in this kind of diving, but it's my understanding that SWBO happens on ascent, whereas this story states "...a father and son were diving in Kahana Bay when both were caught in a current..." so it sounds like the son survived a challenging swim while the father did not.
