To be very honest, there really isn't a lot of difference in storing closed or open for extended periods. We have tested both and have not seen any significant difference between the two. Some people feel more comfortable thinking that they would be defroming the o-ring over an extended period of time but that is not the case as the materials we use do not have an extended memory.

Same goes with the flash and it too would be fine if left closed. The one thing I recommend with the flash however is to place a moisture muncher in the battery compartment when storing. helps keep any residual mositure from getting to the circuits.
