I just don't log dives
Hi,

I am interested in gaining the PADI Divemaster and Master Suba Diver Rating. I have noticed that the prerequisites for both include the Advanced Open Water. However I would prefer to do 5 specilitaties and skip the Advanced.

If I do 5 specialties, Rescue Diver and complete the minimum number of dives will this qualify me for the ratings? Or would I still need to do the Advanced?

Why skip AOW? Each of the 5 'adventure dives' would count as the first dive of the specialties you want to take. Getting a good price on a course package like this from your instructor will be a lot easier than negotiating prerequisites with PADI.

MSD requires AOW plus Rescue plus 5 Specialties plus 50 logged dives.

But why do you need the AOW if you specialised in Navigation and Deep plus three others? The AOW would become redundant after doing these specialties.

You can likely work this out with the instructor to just send in the paperwork for the AOW when you are done with the specialties or do it the other way around and credit the AOW dives to the specialties.

But then you would have to pay for the AOW right. Seems like a nice way for PADI to make money.

It is a requirement. There is no debate. Go ahead, do your five specialties, including deep an nav and then get the AOW card.

Regardless, you need AOW, or Adventure Diver as a minimum, to do the complete Rescue course.

AOW in the PADI system provides an opportunity to do some extra supervised dives after your OW. It also offers a first look at the specialties, so that you can select the ones you like or need most. I guess it's comparable to the SSI advanced adventurer level.

Aow has required dives that that makes you an advance diver, where your at, I bet you could get a shark diver card for your master card. nitrox is another and no advance required that I remember. Do them cost effective is what your getting at, so keep studying up here on SB and of you go. this whole adventure is $$$$.

Happy Diving

You have just struck on what PADI stands for - Put Another Dollar In.

Kidding aside, yes, you will have to pay for the AOW processing, but if you register for five specialties, there are shops that will probably work with you and just pass on the processing for the AOW. With the right instructor, AOW can be a great class and a great learning experience.
