My wife and I are trying to decide between going back to Palau or trying PNG. We are considering trying live aboard, but my wife does get seasick. Anyone with this problem ever try a live aboard and live to tell???

Go to PNG! We have trip reports, slide shows and galleries for both. Sadly Mike Ball pulled his boat out but there are other good boats in the PNG area. We did Milne Bay which is more Muck diving but there are fantastic reefs and walls. Not a lot of big stuff but otherwise it is a WOW! Destination.

I didn't realize that StarDancer, Febrina, and the Golden Dawn have left PNG - last time I checked they were still operating...are you sure there are no other good boats left in PNG?

Do the Eco Explorer in Palau...... we just got back yesterday and it was the most stable liveaboard we have been on. NO problems for anyone who gets seasick. We did 27 dives in a week, you can't do that land-based. It is high-intensity diving and you get to do it all without long boat rides as the Eco was anchored near the dives sites, longest ride on the chase boat was maybe 15 minutes, most were only 5 minutes. :D

I don't know if it's true all the time, but Palau was very calm when we were there. Known for currents sure, but the boat was moored in protected areas most of the time and even when moving, the surface was like glass. We were on the Aggressor, which is a cat and very stable, didn't feel much like being on a boat. I suspect day boats would have been more likely to cause someone a problem.

(disclaimer - not that I am a good person to judge by - I don't get seasick. My husband does, but he uses the patch no matter what.)

Thanks everyone!! We may get brave and try the live aboard for my wife!!

Hello mjh, for the benefit of the thread starter and as I have said before, there's plenty of big stuff in Milne Bay, especially if you're on a liveaboard like Febrina, Golden Dawn or Chertan. These are the boats with the longest history in MB and they are most likely to find the places frequented by big stuff. All of PNG has both big and small stuff if you know where to find it, but MB also has exceptional critter diving as well as many different types of dive sites-big drop offs, volcanic sand slopes, shallow reef, seamounts, high current passes-definitely a good choice for a a first PNG visit.

Never been to Palau as it is just as expensive as PNG but doesn't have the species diversity or as many different types of diving as PNG. I would put Palau as a distant 3rd or 4th after PNG, Indonesia and possibly parts of the Maylasian side of Borneo... -Andy
