I did, very briefly, and then switched to just slinging any pony/stages on the lefthand side. It works much better: easy to reach and see, easy to protect the valve/reg, much simpler hose routing, easy to remove/cut free if entangled.
 
For an AL40, you will probably ultimately sling it on your left hand side like a stage / deco bottle. They're a bit awkward (length & weight) to do the "pony carry" on the tank. That really should be reserved for 13 cf and 19 cf tanks.
