I like to be able to breathe through my nose for swimming and a mask would be uncomfortable. It's also much less streamlined, so if you're going for that 6 minute score, consider good goggles, and maybe even one of those high tech racing suits they used in the olympics.

There's no way in my mind that a mask would be an advantage.
 
For my DM swim test I was not allowed my Rx Mask, and it was an open ocean swim toward a rock in the distance (3-5 ft visible) As I could not see the rock everyone on the boat had a good laugh at my zig zag pattern over the course of the swim. Might have ended up doing 500 yards, but it was under the time limit, so all was good :)

I have since gotten a pair of Rx goggles for swimming - they are inexpensive ($20 or so at the LDS) so I'd just pick up a pair if it was a question for you.
