I'm pretty sure this is a long shot, but is there a way to modify the proton octo to a proton metal octo? or at least make the proton more cold water capable?

Long shot indeed. Sorry there isn't much that can be done, apart from ordering a complete metal octo. Well, that's not completely true. You could order a metal mesh grid cover assembly. This is the assembly including the purge button. Part #46200525
