Normal response to a freeflowing second stage at the surface is to
turn it face down. Second response is to whack it on your hand.
Third response is to turn down the adjustment if it has one (at least
some of the atomics do).

And 850 PSI in less than ten seconds? I don't think so.
 
The seats take a set over time, especially in the first days after they
are installed. So even if your reg was perfectly tuned on the bench,
a week later it's out of tune. I try to leave my reg sit at the shop
for a week after they finish it, then check it when I pick it up. With
some regularity it needs a tweak.

Note: the Atomics aren't as inclined to do this as there's no load
on the seats when there's no pressure.

Atomic SS1 is a safe-second attached to BC inflator hose ...

Before you stomp on someone you should reread the post, then go away and think about it.

An SS1 is a "Safe Second" (integrated reg and inflator). It's not supposed to freeflow, especially when nobody is breathing on it and it's underwater.

In case of a freeflow, disconnecting the quick disconnect would have been *EXACTLY* the right thing to do, since it would have immediately stopped the air loss if the problem was in the SS1.

And it's entirely possible to go from 850PSI to almost nothing in very short order. A good first stage will deliver a huge amount of air. Check out some prior threads on this subject.

It will work if your second stage is connected to your HP hose. :wink:

An 80 Cu ft 3000 PSI tank at 850 PSI only contains 22.6 Cu ft of air. Since you can't get any air out of it below the pressure for the current depth, it's probably got less than 20 Cu ft available.

A good first stage will deliver well over 30CFM, so it's possible to dump the contents of the tank in well under a minute.

Even at 30 CFM, which won't get delivered through a second stage, 10 seconds vents 5 cf. At a full 30 CFM, 22.6 cf would take 45 seconds.
