CARROLL CO., Ark. -
Search and rescue crews are still searching for a 28-year-old man who went missing while diving in Beaver Lake on Saturday.

“This guy was nationally ranked,” said Alan Bland, a park ranger with the Army Corps of Engineers. “He had never been on Beaver Lake before. They were spear fishing, that’s what they were doing. And we don’t know what happened.”

Bland said the missing man was free diving, or diving without an oxygen tank, with a partner when he never resurfaced.

Bland said the cove where the man was diving is densely-populated with trees, making it difficult for divers to search the area.

“Anywhere past 50 feet is pitch black,” said Bland. “You can’t see your hand in front of your face. You’re just going by hand trying to feel for a body. You just close your eyes and go down and keep feeling.”

Teams of divers and search and rescue crews from several agencies had been searching since before noon on Saturday.

“We’ve got boats blocking the perimeter trying not to let any other boats in,” said Bland. It’s a total team effort out there to try and find this person and get him out.”

Three agencies are using sonar to help with the search.

“Sonar looks at the bottom of the lake in a 3D view, and you can really tell what’s going on at the bottom of the lake,” said Bland.

Park rangers said if they are unable to find the missing diver on Saturday night, recovery efforts will begin again Sunday morning.

The Army Corps of Engineers estimated about 25 people have assisted in this search. They said the area around the cove will be treated as a crime scene until the diver’s body is recovered from the lake.

That site is an utter mess of trees & debris. Very sad indeed. Hope his family gets some closure soon.

Glad they were able to get him out of there.
