Bimini Bay is a multi-million dollar project that plans, and has already started, to replace Bimini's mangrove wetlands with condos, a casino, a golf course and more. The Bimini islands are only about 9 square miles in size, much of it wetlands, and if fully completed the Bimini Bay Resort will be take up more land than everything else that currently exists here, combined.

In the year 2000, Bimini was designated as the highest priority site in the Bahamas for a Marine Protected Area. Today, the MPA still has not been implemented, and the resort's golf course is now slated to replace the area designated for protection. The Bimini Bay Resort & Casino has generated a staggering amount of local, national, and international controversy (see Bimini Bay media and quotes Bimini Bay Resort - An Ecological Disaster), though the continue to press on.

Many efforts are being made to limit the size of the proposed resort, and convince the developers and the government of the Bahamas that Bimini's economic & ecological health will be destroyed by the creation of a golf course. Perhaps the best chance this island has for a sustainable, secure future comes from the efforts of the Save Bimini campaign. ( Save Bimini)

Save Bimini is a group of locals, and supporters, that have organized a movement to protect their island, their resources, and their future. For the first time ever, the Save Bimini campaign is asking for donations. The problem in opposing this development is not the lack of facts or information that prove its destructive fate, but rather getting that information to the people that need to see it.

Every dollar donated to Save Bimini can help create fliers, accommodate film teams, and much more. This is one campaign where every single dollar truly can make a difference.

The vast majority of people on Bimini do not want it to continue any further, yet most of them feel powerless to do anything about it. Many of the people living on Bimini, that will be negatively impacted by this contentious resort, simply don't have the time or the money to fight back anymore.

If you can, please help the Save Bimini campaign. And if you can't make a donation at this time, the please help inform more people by forwarding on the Save Bimini website address: Save Bimini

Developers and government work hand in hand. If it wasn't for developers you wouldn't see people spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to get commision seats in florida, that have a salary of $30k a year. The people of florida are powerless when it comes to developers, I don't think the people of Bimini will fare any better. They walled off our ocean with high rises, I doubt Bimini will be able to stop them. The only way you can stop this is to pay the officials more than the developers are paying them. Then you have to do it again when the next developer comes along. The developers have discovered Bimini. Once the first one makes a good profit they will swarm over it like locusts.

Good luck!
