This was our second trip to Cozumel for diving and we chose Scuba Club Cozumel because we stayed last year at Hotel Cozumel and didn’t like it. I’m glad we tried SCC because this is now our hotel of choice when we come to dive. It was everything we hoped for – clean room, quiet hotel, on the water, and a great dive operation.
Our room was #42, ground level and was on the dive shop side of the hotel. Little patio with a nice view of the water and “beach”. (When I say beach…there is no beach per se, just sand.) King sized bed was firm but not rock hard as some of the other beds we’ve discovered in Cozumel. Air conditioner was loud so we tried to sleep with the windows open and the fan on – however the fan sounded like it was going to fall off….but overall the room was nice. In speaking with other guests, some of whom have been coming to SCC for years, tell us that every room is different. For example the room next to us also had a king sized bed, but the bathroom was upstairs, and they had a wraparound patio on the water. This is the room we want for our next visit. The chambermaids are fantastic.
There was some conversation about ground floor vs. upper floor. With the ground floors, you are close to the action and don’t have to walk far….but the view is not great. On the upper floors, better sea view, but to have to schlep your equipment up two to three flights of stairs if you don’t use a locker.
Restaurant and bar – this is where everyone gathers for the meals, and for the most part guests will stay in their groups. Food was a solid average / good with a sprinkle of really good...nothing to write home about. Every day there is a lunch and dinner special. And once a week, there is a Mexican Beach party with BBQ. On the night of our BBQ, they had some of the best carne asada that we have ever had --- our compliments to the chef. The servers are wonderful and attentive.
Dive operation -- The dive operation is very good and efficient. You are usually assigned to the same boat for your stay so you will get to know the crew and your dive master. We had Aeriel as our DM and he has this uncanny knack for finding the smallest sea creatures….he even found a female octopus with her eggs in a small hole….but then he knows these reefs like the back of his hand.
We were weathered out on one day of diving, so the dive shop offered us a discount on the two tank twilight / night dive. My recommendation is to do that dive!
