The shop is in Myrtle Beach. That area sees almost 15 million tourists a year. It's not quite a small community (dive or otherwise)

Most, if not all, of those "Advanced" sites are roughly 2+ hours off shore and generally have some sort of current and low viz.

My guess is they want you to have your advanced dive so that they know you have atleast some basic knowledge of deep dives and are semi-competent at diving.

That said, I have seen some fairly stupid people with AOW certifications that never should have gotten there OW certs. Example, my last dive with them we had a guy come up from 75 ft with 100psi in his tank, nowhere near the boat. He was AOW certified.
