Shipping live bugs: Does anyone here do it? Do you need a permit to ship? Is it expensive? Is it worth it?

I thought it'd be a nice treat for my poor parents who don't get to eat lobster very often. What do YOU think?

Nate

You need a cooler seaweed and ice. You have to seal the cooler, You can ship them with either Fed Ex or UPS. Overnight of course, but it ain't cheap.
I've had them shipped to me that way from up north. It might be cheaper to just buy them at your local super market.

Assuming you are talking about Fla reef roaches the best method I've ever used was to freeze them while alive with liquid Nitrogen. They kept in luggage for over a week in a good quiality ice chest. Boiled in saltwater while still frozen they were identical in taste and texture to those cooked alive.

Alternately if you can do a Delta Dash type thing you can place them in an oversized chest with a few holes drilled in it for ventilation. Keep the bugs in a bag, and wrap the bag in a large seawater wet towell. This is good for about 24 hours. Keep them at or below 75°F but above about 65°F.

Thanks for the input. I did some research online and agree, it would probably much cheaper to buy the lobsters at the store. So if any friends or family want my bugs, they need to come see me!!
