I think it depends a great deal on the environment and topology of the cave your diving in. The majority of the caves around here are small, low vis and often offer a guarantied zero vis exit. I, and the consensus of anyone who has dove up here feel solo is at least as safe or safer than with a buddy - in this environment.

Tourist cave in Florida where you could drive down the cave in a bus with a hundred feet of vis? Well, a team can be a real asset when it can work as a team.
