Unfortunate loss; very little info. It does drive home that when shore diving, you are pretty much on your own.

A Reno man died Tuesday while spear fishing along the Mendocino Coast, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

Joseph Paul Ramirez, 31, was with a friend in a cove south of Little River at about 11 a.m. when he became distressed, according to Sheriff’s Capt. Kurt Smallcomb.

His dive partner was unable to assist him and swam to shore to get help, he said.

Rescue officials in a boat found Ramirez unconscious and not breathing, Smallcomb said.

They began resuscitation efforts and flew Ramirez to Ukiah Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, he said.

A Reno, Nev. man died Tuesday after becoming distressed while diving near Buckhorn Cove south of Little River, near Albion, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday.

Sheriff's deputies, the Albion-Little River Fire Department, Mendocino Fire Department, Cal Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard responded at about 11 a.m. to a report of a diver in distress at the location.

The diver, identified as Joseph Paul Ramirez, 31, was spear fishing with a friend when he became distressed "for an unknown reason," according to the MCSO. Ramirez's dive partner couldn't help him and swam to shore to get help.

Authorities searched for Ramirez by boat and found him in the water, unconscious and not breathing. Responders started cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately, the MCSO said. Ramirez was taken to shore and the U.S. Coast Guard airlifted him to Ukiah Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
