The owner of the property told me the canal is sometimes dry if there is a drought. Maybe I'll have to wait until that happens.
 
I don't know much about metal detectors, but might that be an option from above to pinpoint it (assuming the rocket is metallic)?
 
The rocket is mostly fiberglass. There are a few metal screws and 2 eyebolts, and the GPS module and battery.
