I don't think I'd like the idea of a 'polycarbonate' STA on my rig. Poly DIR approved, ya think?

I don't see it as an issue myself. I had the same response before I saw the sta, nothings going to happen to it -- its ~1/2" thick and otherwise well designed.

Is there any peference to the style of cam bands though?

The tried and true bulletproof ones are the ones from Scubapro. AFAIK the patent is still in effect, and nobody else has come up with a more reliable band in over 10 years. There have been a few attempts to design around the patent, none totally effective.

Plastic cams are not going to be found on my gear, any more than plastic buckles. The SP bands STAY adjusted once set and can be reset very quickly if you change tank sizes. Mechanical advantage on the latch is over 6:1 with an overcenter locking action. To get them to come open, you have to tighten them a bit more so accidental "tank loss" is simply NOT possible if the bands are even close to adjusted properly.
