You made no mistake. The instructor as well made no mistake. You were watching, and concluded that the student was in control, but was ready to assist if needed. The instructor had his/her attention focused on the student that was performing a skill, and looked over to see a problem. He/She elected to assist. I would have waited to see if the student needed assistance first, but there really is no right or wrong way of handling this. The most important factor was that if an incident started to escalate, and risked turning into an emergency, both you and the instructor were ready and able to take control.

Good job being on top of things, shows you are already capable of recognizing and responding to incidents appropriately.
