Looking to purchase a long boat coat to wear over my 7 mil during S.I. when I dive in the cooler months. Most of the coats sold by scuba stores go for ~ $130.00 on up. My daughter, who swims competetively, has what looks to be the same thing which can be bought for less than $70.00. My question to anyone who knows is there any difference to justify the added cost-maybe more thermal protection? Or are they the same thing marketed to two different user markets?

Thanks,

mg

Watch for quality issues.

When I check out the "swim parkas" at the local sporting goods shop, the fleece lining was noticeably thinner and shed what I tried it on.

My TruWest boat coat is much heavier and hasn't shown any signs of wear.

Isn't TruWest technically a "swim" parka? Not that I am doubting their quality...in fact if I could of bought one during their clearance sale eariler this month before they had all sold out I would not even be posting this question.

Likely.

However, my point is not to go by the marketing title, but by the quality.

Bet the swim parkas don't have a dive flag on them----that's worth @ least what 35 to 40 bucks most places....:)

We have two different parkas in our household: The DAN one, and a True West. There really isn't any comparison. The True West parka has a thicker, softer and less "sheddy" lining. It's better made. We paid less for it -- go figure.

Heck, I just go to Goodwill and buy an extra large used trench coat. Much cheaper and satisfactory IMHO. And I can personalize it with my logo for a mere $8.
