Boat washed, bugs cleaned, and in bed by 1:45, and it's 8am now and I'm at work, lol. Lobster for lunch because TGIF.

Went out, decent viz, tons of life! Shovelnosed guitar fish, thornback rays, stingrays, halibut, red rock crab, decorater crabs, sheep crab, horn sharks, (one about 4 ft.), leopard sharks, swell sharks, scallops, gorgonians, cleaner shrimp, cabazon, scorpion fish, sand bass, calicos, senoritas, surf perch, pretty much everything you can see on a dive out here.

And lobsters.

I got 4 nice ones. Great dive!

Hey kyle are you talking about san juan rocks or it A "SECRET REEF" I didnt remember seeing it on frankos map, how bout some coordinates :D I may be heading down sat morning and anchor over night depending on what the swells are like, my buddy said this morning they were flat so the swell predictions may be off

Date: 6-Oct, 2005
Dive Location: Dana Point reef
Time: 9:30pm and 11:00pm
Bottom Time: 34 and 45
Max Depth: 30 feet
Vis: 15-20!!!
Wave height: 2 at 2 seconds, bumpy but no wind.
Temp at depth: 62
Surface Temp: 67
Tide information: Low, rising

We dove Dana Point last night and the red tide is gone! The vis was as good as it was last year with at least 15'.
On the first dive I was able to grab an easy limit of bugs, and they are the largest I have seen in this area. I also grabbed a nice 7 pounder that barely fit in my bag. My other two buddies were only able to grab 1 or 2 bugs, hehe, suckers.

Dive number two, I was the spotter and was able to point out limits to my other buddies so they wouldn't feel so bad. I also found a brand new aluminum anchor, and 4 stuck stainless steel hoop nets!! I tied them all together and sent up a float with a beacon so we could retreive the items later. Chaaaching on this dive!!

On the way back to the harbor we were pulled over by the Coast Guard. This was at midnight, no other boats out, and this little inflatable with 5 dudes armed to the teeth zoom right up on us, with lights out, and instant spot lights on us. They check ID's, and search my boat, and "inspect" our lobsters. Wierd.

Boat washed, bugs cleaned, and in bed by 1:45, and it's 8am now and I'm at work, lol. Lobster for lunch because TGIF.

I'll be happy to give you the GPS, but please don't disturb the abalone that are there. They are my favorite to look at.

San Juan rock is for newbies.

Date: October 7, 2005
Dive Location: La Jolla Shores
Time: 6:04 PM
Bottom Time: 55 minutes
Max Depth: 126 feet
Vis: 6-8 ft shallows, 40+ ft canyon
Wave height: 1-2
Temp at depth: 54
Tide information: very low.

Had to try out my light cannon (UK) finally, so headed out to LJS for an evening dive.. Met up with Bryce and Josh from OE at Vallecitos and headed out to the orange buoy in search of the Cabezon Cruiser. Dropped down into 33 ft and headed southwest, 240 on the compass. Plan was to hit 125 ft and turn left. Never found the cruiser, but the vis was spectacular- the light from our cannons ran out before the vis did... easily 40 ft. Met up with a large banded guitarfish, but jet fin boy silted the place up so none of my pictures came out. :11: There were octos everywhere and a smug looking lobster nestled in a downed kelp strand... waggling his antennas at us, knowing that he was safe from becoming someone's dinner.. Lots of baitfish and senoritas out and about.. along with the usual pipefish, slugs, crabs, lizardfish, etc. On the orange buoy's anchor line, there was quite the collection of hermissendas (7- 10 of them), but I didn't see many nudis elsewhere on the dive. There was a baby horn shark snoozing on the sand in about 25 ft, didn't seem to mind some spectators.
Vis in the shallows ( 25 ft on in) was pretty lousy and the water was greenish, so we cut our dive short and I exited with about 1000 psi. UK's light cannon rocks :07:

Date: September 24-October 1
Location: Bonaire
Bottom Time: 1474 minutes
Max Depth: 94 feet
Viz: 30-100’
Wave Height: ankle slappers to 3’
Temp range: 84-86 (rock on!)

Six days, 25 dives; I needed to get back to work to recover from my vacation!

Bonaire is definitely one of THE places to dive. Entries can be difficult, not because of the waves but because almost all the entries are rocky. I have several bruises that show just how graceful I am when trying to get in/out of the water. Diving here is definitely 24 hours a day (good thing for Nitrox). The dive shop leaves tanks out for use which we sure took advantage of. Awesome! We did 6 boat dives, but next time will just stick to driving around the island and checking out the different dive sites. (One thing good about the boat dives is that the DM pointed out the frogfish and seahorse. Without him doing so, I don’t think we would have ever found them even though I looked for them during every dive.)

Some of the most exciting things that we saw were several different species of eels (everywhere); a seahorse; squid; octopus; tarpon; frogfish; sea turtles; white-spotted eagle ray; and barracuda (big).

My favorite dive sites were Karpata and Witches Hut. The colors of everything were amazing. I can’t think of any other descriptions except for enchanting and fey. The coral formations reminded me of sandcastles made from dripping wet sand through your fingers.

While I was there I celebrated my 100th dive and not in what I hear was the traditional way. I flooded my camera. Bummer, but it was insured. My husband said that it was too bad that it wasn’t a more memorable dive. Oh, I think it was memorable alright!

My buddy was great and some of the best above water time was spent kicking back on the beach after a long day of diving, sipping cold beer. We also spent lots of time with other divers from ScubaBoard that made the trip wonderful.

Now that my gear and skin is finally dried out and I’m rested; I’m already thinking of the next destination to head to…

And now for something completely differerent....
Desiring a completely new experience in diving, Mo2vation and I came up with a corker!

1 Dive
1/3 of a Tank of air
3 sites
2 days

Dive One-and-Only-One shall be described in 3 Acts:

Act I: 10/7/05, Malibu, 9:17 PM, 17fsw, 6 min.
Elapsed psi: 3550 - 3100 = 450 psi
Pendulum diving in the fog. Like Foucault's mighty plumb-bob-on-a-string, we swung for 6 minutes.
"Hey, we're over the reef...whoops, now we're over sand...look, it's the reef again..."
Lather, rinse, repeat. Lobster were measured so we could impune their short stature and release them into the wild, wild, murk.
We're outta here..

Act II: 10/8/05, Diver's Cove in Laguna, 8:16 AM, 34fsw, 11 min.
Elapsed psi: 3100 - 2700 = 400 psi
Joined by Rickster, we three charged the rising surf between Hawaii 5-0 sets, dropped into wet smoke and muddy swirling water...(Think: One hand in front of your head, because water that dark has just GOT to be a rock....Nope, just water that dark.)
Uh-Oh...2 out of 3 divers does NOT a dive team make!
Circle 'round, lights up, rotate while singing...

"Are ya' ready kids? I can't hear you!...." (to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot...")

I'm a little lighthouse, tall and bright,
Here is my tower, here is my light.
When the viz gets bad an' buddy's out of sight,
Dive's all over, 'cause this jus' BITES!!!

Act III: 10/8/05, Picnic Reef in Laguna, 8:45AM, 35 fsw, 9 minutes
Elapsed psi: 2700 - 2250 = 450psi
Anyone could go ashore and walk to Picnic Beach. We surface swam it in rising chop, swallowing water, Victory at Sea theme music. Dropped to find gorgonia, rock, and the last of our patience withering away like old seaweed on a hot, dry beach.
9 minutes, 3 of that as a safety stop.
'Bye
Graceful exit (between more Hawaii 5-0 sets, to a beach now officially closed by the snorkle police), and it was time to get the heck out of Dodge.

One dive, 1/3 of a tank, three sites, two days.
Ok, what's next???

Mega-mondo "Thanks" to the only amazing dive partner that could have made all this fun.

Mo2vation Rocks & Rules!!!

Ciao,
Claudette

You're telling me - cool report Claudette!!

Sorry conditions weren't better for you. Did everyone have fun BBQing and visiting? Interesting that Laguna Sea Sports has Shaw's Cove diving conditions for 10/8 with 1 ft. surf and 12 - 15 ft. visibility. Scrap that report.

Hi wetrat! Thanks....No matter how good or bad the conditions at a Wrinkles Dive, the absolute BEST part is always the people!!
Ken did a great wrap-up of all the good parts over on the Wrinkles Oct '05 thread, post #46:

http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?p=1297815#post1297815

I wonder what the folk at Laguna SS smok....uh, I mean, "ate" for breakfast?? It was pounding 3-4 feet on the set waves when we rolled up a little before 0700.

12-15 ft viz? That was the viz in the bathrooms, maybe...

I'm looking forward (again!) to seeing everyone and diving in GREAT conditions at the November Wrinkles: Casino Point!
