When I was teaching I would write all the kids’ names to learn them, seating charts... and I actually got them faster than most. But I am normally terrible with them, so co-workers were a big problem....
I taught Band in two different systems. The first, like the one I grew up with, was full rehearsals outside of school hours and small group lessons during school where kids were pulled from class. Pretty easy learning names quickly that way.
The other system was band "classes". Say, 4 Grade 7 classes of 25-30 kids meeting 4 out every 6 days (we had this insane 6 day "cycle" system instead of a Mon.-Fri. week). Much harder to learn names that way (you also had 4 Gr. 8 classes). That seems to be the most common Canadian way.
