You spent $2600 and they charged you 15% on the $200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My shop offers 10% discount for cash and only 4% if using charge card! I bring cash and the first stop is the dive shop...

@flyboy08 Yea - that's a bit of a slap in the face. Overall costs for diving ($80/two tank dive) was good, so I guess it all works out. We tipped the DM and boat captains pretty well, as they are the ones who really make the difference in a good trip vs. bad trip. The front office..... not so much.

Yeah, this person is clearly confusing "Decline the transaction" with "Decline the conversion".

Oh. Maybe I misread that. What does "decline the conversion" mean, then?

Not getting ripped off for 6% which is what the MX banks want to charge. By declining the conversion you are converting the currency with whatever fee's your bank/credit card charges. The trick is to make sure you know what that rate is. I have a no-forex fee credit card. Even at my Canadian home bank if I were to order pesos before I left *only* charges 5%. I believe US citizens have many more non-forex options than us Canadians.

My trick I learned from forums up here is to pre-pay my non-forex credit card so I have a negative balance. I ended the trip with -$7.00 on my card. Otherwise cash advance fees would be $$$. We each have one of these cards so one is used for cash withdraws and the other regular spending.

When we signed in at Aldora I paid $1000usd as a deposit. Problem was Miguel forgot I paid it in cash and wouldn't give me the 10% off for USD. Well he did eventually as Memo I assume understood what I did and told Miguel to give me the 10% on the $1000. Hope they did figure I wasn't trying to stiff them, he did write $1000USD cash deposit on the invoice. Might not do that again. I figure its better they had some of the cash vs it sitting in the casa.

And I'm not sure if anyone can top this (or admit to it) but a few years ago we stayed for 17 days at the Villa Aldora in the big suite and dove like 11 days for 3 divers.I had easily over $10K USD and didn't declare it. -I didn't have to at home and did NOT feel comfortable declaring it at CUN. So I shoved it in my socks. It worked out but I won't be doing that again.

    Re: cash payments, etc.....

I hope Zelle/Venmo or some other technology company can make this a simpler transaction someday.

@mikeycanuk - next time, send me the $10k, and I'll hold it for you and dole it out to you as needed. I promise.

Yes, I also don't like carrying a lot of cash. I just won't book with a dive op that won't take cards at a reasonable rates -- there are plenty of good dive ops who will (we've used Tres Pelicanos and Jungle Divers).

Neither do I but I have always had good luck with the Banorte ATM in the City Hall building across Melgar from El Cantil. I always use the same ATM and I keep all my receipts. Occasionally it cannot print one (out of paper?), so I take a picture of the transaction with my phone. I bring enough US cash to pay my hotel room bill with a little extra to get me started, and then I pay for everything else including my dive bill with pesos from the ATM. To each his own but this works for me.
