Geoff probably summed up everything so I just wanted to confirm the boat trips I would most recommend: Oil Rigs, Farnsworth (Catalina), Casino point (to get the Catalina flavor), Yukon (if you are feeling like driving to SD). Some of these are advanced dives so you probably want to acclimate with everything before diving these, except for casino point which can be a summary of what you can see at any depth in Southern Call. Sort out your gear and as soon as you get here you will figure out the rest. You can dive practically anywhere around So Cal beaches as long as you figure out surf entries which I am guess you can learn with someone from MD (I trained with then and highly recommend). If you are lucky and Oct is like last year, you will get the warmest possible water and great viz. Ironically our best diving conditions seem to run between late Oct and February...
