Ive been reading around the forums lately and alot of people talk about how they participate in the cleaning of rivers and lakes by volunteering and picking up trash off the bottom. Not only is this good for the environment but they are always talking about all the cool stuff they find. Does anyone know of anything like this in Maryland. I live in gaithersburg and would like to participate in it. So any information would help.

SilverS2K,

While it is a long way off, September, we annually sponsor a cleanup of the lake at Green Brier State Park, between Frederick and Hagerstown. We provide food (dogs and burgers) and prizes for people who sign up through the shop. All we ask is that they bring a covered dish or other food item. A good time is had by all and no one walks away hungry or empty handed.

The clean up last year was great! We got a lot of trash, which of course is the goal. The event is open to all comers, however if you wish to participate in Blue Marbles after dive pot luck you would need to sign up ahead of time with the shop, and bring a covered dish to share with everyone. The shop provides prizes for everyone that signs up for the event through them. They need to know ahead of time how many will be at the pot luck, and be participating in the prize give away, so that they may have enough prizes, and burgers and dogs. They have some very nice prizes,{fins, dry boxes...}, and it is free to participate. The park does not charge admission to divers or they're guests. You would be amazed what you can find in a 30 minute dive or two. Hopefully we will see you there this year!!

Yes you can dive at greenbriar during it's open season, spring thru fall. However it is not the best place to dive, 30' max depth, low vis. The closest place to you would be Millbrook Quarry, out interstate 66 toward manassas va. It is leased and operated by "The Dive Shop" in fairfax va.. They are having a chili willy dive the 8th of march, from 10:00 to 3:00. The cost is 20.00. Just google millbrook quarry for info. Look forward to seeing you this fall.
