Heading to GC in June. Staying up in West Bay next to Turtle Reef. Has anyone been to Barkers Nat'l Park or along the road in that area? From Google Earth, it looks undeveloped with easy access to beaches on the sound. Looks nice and quiet someplace to hang out when taking a break from diving. We have been to GC many times over many years but never to this part of the island.

Hey there, I live right beside Barkers National Park. I was walking there last night. Very quiet beach, only one condo development on it, the rest are private houses or National Park. This is a very popular area for Kite Surfing and horse riding tours also use the beach. It is not really a swimming beach however, very shallow and protected by a fringing reef. Great if you want to walk the beach, or through the mangroves. There are also lots of quiet areas along Seven Mile Beach that you can hang out on, and also get in the water. Barkers unfortunately does gather a lot of trash at certain times of the year due to Nor Westers that come in. I filled a bag last night collecting rubbish.

Thanks KiltGirl, what quiet areas on 7mb would you recommend? When we stay on 7mb, we stay on the north end to avoid the cruise ship crowds.

I like to stay up on the North end of the SMB too. I usually hang out just in front of Heritage Club condos. You can park your car on the road, and walk through the scrub land just beside the condos.

Great. Thanks. How does it compare to say cemetery beach?

You can access the bits of barkers roughly to where the kite surfing is easily enough in a rental car. Beyond that the track is rocky, full of holes and not really suitable for a small rental vehicle. And if its been raining (ie summer) parts might be unpassable.

That said you can easily walk to the head of barkers in 15 mins from the kite surfing place so its not a problem. No facilities or toilets there.

Thanks String! We will likely be renting a small car so we will take note.

Rum Point is the place to relax :)...grab a hammock and let the day roll by.

Familiar with rum point but way too long a drive for what we are looking for and where we are staying

Not sure i'd agree with Rum Point unless your idea of relaxing is sharing a massive commercialised enterprise with hundreds, potentially thousands of other people (depending on how many boats are in). I'd rank it as the least quiet relaxing place on the island!

Kaibo a little further down is quieter, Starfish point is better again if you want properly deserted.

Or if you want beaches closer to home, try Spotts or even Smith Cove (again if not too many boats in).
