We (my wife and I) are in the process of taking a NAUI basic OW course here in Iowa, but she is having a lot of trouble with it due to our "mask fin snorkel pickup" skill she doesn't believe she can do (see my post in http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=73891#post73891 about it). Part of it is also due to the fact that I think she isn't comfortable with our instructor.

Anyway, I think I will encourage her to drop the class (I'm still having fun in it, though seeing her unhappy reduces my enthusiasm) and take something "friendlier" when we visit Florida this summer.

Of course, I want her to be well-trained, safe, and comfortable, but without the sort of "boot camp" atmosphere of our current NAUI course. I am aware of debate surrounding the "quality" of PADI instruction, but she needs to have an introduction to scuba that is fun, or I risk a lifetime of marital stife trying to take dive trips when she doesn't want to go. It sounds like a PADI course is our best bet.

Okay, now that I've given the long-winded background, my question: who/where in South Florida (Boynton would be ideal, but anywhere between Ft.Lauderdale and West Palm would be great) would be a good place to get her certified? I'm even thinking about going through the cert. process with her, as the cost of a course appears to be not that much more than the cost of doing my OW checkout dives for the NAUI course.

I hope you all understand where I'm coming from. I look forward to your responses!

Thanks:)

Chris

It sounds to me like you are looking for a different instructor more than a different organization. I have taken the Naui OW, and a refresher and AOW from 3 different instructors and none was even remotely like a boot camp.

I think an instructor should be firm, but just because someone knows how to do something does not make them a good teacher.

Just my 2cents...

Good luck, and also good catch on understanding the need for a good relationship with the people you live with!
