Location
china at the moment
Hi
Can anyone advise on where to learn to dive in asia in July for myself and my partner wants to relax on a nice beach.
I did an intro dive in oz and loved it and now have a few weeks to fit in a dive course before heading back to uk. We are currently in china and could fly from beijing or our final flight to uk is from hong kong to some other destination in Asia. we are on a bit of a budget so reasonable flights would be needed from either of the above.
The Phillipines has been mentioned but not sure if the right time of year for beach and diving... flights to manila are good. I looked at Bali but flights were much more expensive...there were also flights to phuket.
so any advice would be gratefully recieved
Many Thanks
Leah

In my opinion, the quality of diving is much better in the Philippines and Indonesia, compared to Phuket. All three locations offer plenty of dive operations and are relatively economical to travel.

If you head towards the Philippines, then you should know that there isn't any diving directly in Manila. You can travel to Subic Bay or Anilao (3-4hr bus) or catch a bus/ferry to Puerto Galera to hit the nearest diving spots. Cheap(ish) internal flights will take you to other locations, such as Cebu or Bohol. From Cebu, you can also travel onwards to Moalboal or Malapascua. Different locations in the Philippines have different 'vibes'... so there is plenty of scope to pick a destination that suits your budget and personal preferences.

Here's a breakdown on the primary locations:

Subic Bay - former US Navy base, just north of Manila. Easily accessable by bus (cost approx 225php each way/trip 3-4 hours). It is a very sheltered bay, offering reliable diving in anything other than the most severe weather conditions. It is world reknown for the large number of diveable shipwrecks, including many WWII American and Japanese warships. There are also some pleasant coral reefs with a wide variety of marine creatures. The variety of shipwrecks makes this an excellent destination for history buffs and technical divers. The calm water conditions and shallow water make it perfect for training courses. Water visibility at some of the sites can be lower, due to silting from the river that feeds into the Bay (a problem that has persisted since the eruption of Mt Pinatubo in 1991). Plenty of hotels and resorts to suit most budgets. Not all resorts have a nice beach.

Anilao - A quiet province, just south of Manila. Accommodation is almost exclusively in isolated resorts, which means that transport is not as direct. Many visitors opt to hire a driver/car or taxi, rather than go on a multi-stage trip using public transport (typically bus to Batangas, Jeepney to the nearest town, then trike to the resort). Car/Driver/Taxi will cost in the region of $100US. Very secluded locations, lots of peace and quiet. No nightlife outside of the resort. Beaches are mostly pebble, not sand. The area is known as one of the best 'macro' marine life locations in the world, with very high bio-diversity. This is a great place to dive, if you have an interest in brightly colored nudibranch (sea slugs), exotic shrimps, crabs, eels and octopus. There are, of course, many fish species and occasional encounters with pelagic animals like sharks and mantas. The variety of marine life and macro critters make this an amazing destination for underwater photographers.

Malapascua A little off the beaten path, this island has a sleepy and secluded atmosphere. It is accessable via flight to Cebu, bus/taxi to the northern shore, then water taxi. The island is world famous as one of the only locations where divers can reliably encounter Thresher sharks. It is also reliable for other pelagic encounters, such as manta rays. It has a wide bio-diversity, with much macro marine life and schooling fish. I recommend Evolution Divers. Matt (one of the owners) is here on SB.

Moalboal A few hours south of Cebu, this is another top Philippines diving destination. It is famed for it massive congregations of schooling fish. Again, not much infrastructure or commercialization here. Check out Savedra Dive Centre.

Coron On the island of Palawan, accessable by internal flight. Coron is another world famous wreck diving destination, with many Japanese war wrecks. Lots of nice resorts around the area. Can trip from here to visit the 'Underground River' near Puerto Princessa. This is well worth the trip and is in competition for recognition as one of the new 'Seven Wonders of the World'. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bohol An island next to Cebu. It is accessable via direct flight from Manila, or via ferry from Cebu. Good all-round diving, nice coral reefs. Plenty of interesting non-diving activities, such as the 'Chocolate Hills' (UNESCO world heritage site) and seeing the 'Tarsier monkeys'.

Phuket, Thailand, is a much more commercialized holiday location than anywhere you'll find in the Philippines. There are a wide variety of dive centres and several members of this forum work/own centres there. IMHO, the quality of diving there isn't as high, unless you spend more money and opt for a liveaboard trip that reaches some of the offshore sites not accessable by day boats.

Hi

A nice beach to relax!!!
How about the World famous White Beach in the Island of Boracay? Just a short domestic flight from Manila and equally short land and sea transfer. Several reputable dive operators on the island to choose from and all types of accommodation to suit all budget.
The beach on Malapascua is pretty good, diving is phenomenal but the fresh water is the let down.

Wow
Thanks awesome information...we found flights to Manila no probs or another alternative was Sabah.
Will check out the internal flights in the phillipines.
What about the monsoon season??? Would the Phillipines be ok.
Thanks again great info and much appreciated.

Weather would be your main concern from June to Nov because of typhoon. But I had never missed a day of diving because of it over last 10yrs.
Visayas area is least affected and Cebu is your point of entry to the country. From Cebu you can branch out to: Bohol, Camotes, Dumaguette, Malapascua and Moalboal etc etc. You can also stay on Mactan Island(Cebu) and dive around it. Most of the resorts on Mactan island are on the expensive side.

Another option from China is OKinawa, Japan. We have some great beaches and the diving is fantastic. A very short hop from China- multiple flights from the major cites and HK. July is typhoon season for this part of the world (PI, Okinawa etc..) but the diving is great also. We normally lose a couple days to weather in July but typhoons normally only effect us for a day or two as they pass over and we start diving again right away.

Thanks again... I am trying to research all options to keep everyone happy. Really hope I can pull something off... Would love to do Padi course.
Regards
Leah

We offer both NAUI and PADI courses- most of our customers choose NAUI but we have instructors for both.

Hi,

You mentioned you are considering Sabah as a location for learning to dive during July.

You can catch cheap, regular flights to Kota Kinabalu (capital city of Sabah) from Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong.

July is during the 'Dry Season' in Sabah. Typically the weather is hot and humid all year round (~30C) with blue skies in the morning and the possibility of some tropical rain later in the day.

You can choose from a couple of locations in Sabah - the two most popular being Kota Kinabalu (KK) and Semporna. Kota Kinabalu has good training conditions for learning to dive in nearby Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. There are a wide choice of hotels in KK and bars, restaurants and shops (to suit all budgets). If your other half wants to chill out in a beach then he can either visit the islands you'll be diving around or you need to choose your hotels carefully (as KK city itself does not have a beach). Semporna is located on the opposite side of Sabah and is the gateway to the Resorts near Sipadan / Mabul. There are a wide range of Dive Operators / Resorts here to choose from to suit every budget. Just make sure you choose your Dive Operator carefully as the quality of experience can very significantly (same as anywhere else in the world). Semporna isn't the nicest of places to stay, but is very cheap.

Hope this helps. Enjoy learning to dive!

Hi Chocks -

Bali may be a little more expensive to get here but once you are here you living costs are considerably cheaper than many places around Asia. What you also have to look at when you are choosing your location is the quality of the dive center that you are doing your training with. Don't get me wrong, but don’t just go on the price of the PADI course...cheaper does not necessarily mean better.

You might also want to look at completed in the knowledge development sessions of your course at home before you go on your holiday via PADI's e-learning program, saving you time in the classroom ad more time in the pool and open water to concentrate on your skills. (It might even mean you have more time on your holiday to go fun diving after the course!)

There are not many places worldwide to complete your Open Water Diver Course than somewhere around Asia. Here in Indonesia we have some of the healthiest reefs in the world being situated in the coral triangle where different ocean currents converge giving us abnormally nutrient rich waters. If you did your certification with us here in Bali we would take you to the USAT Liberty Wreck in Tulamben which has been underwater for over 40 years now and is inhabited by the most diverse marine life guaranteeing you the best diving experience that will get you hooked on the adventure for the rest of your life!

Hope this helps a little in your decision making
Phil
