Cross post from strobes
Hi folks, I can't seem to get my setup to fire the strobe in synce with the shutter. I'm kind of new to using a strobe so looking for some debug and test advice.

Camera: Olympus xz-1
Case: pt-050
strobe: sea&sea ys-01
Connected via fiber cable to case plug hole.
I have tried a couple different camera modes. I tried blocking any extra light coming out of the front of the case. But I'm not sure how to debug by the numbers.

Flash works fine with shutter, but strobe allways fires late , both TTL and manual.

Thanks!

Hmm couple testing notes: different flash sync modes don't seem to effect it much I get maybe 1:10 try's the flash to sync. Locking the auto focus seems to make it worse, most reliable for flash sync seems to be press and pray but that is not so helpful for getting a in focus picture. Adding or removing a magic filter (wet attachment) seems to mark focus worse but the flash behavior seems static but might be worse hard to judge,

I was not able to get TTL to work consistently. I use forced flash, 1/64 sec and shoot manual mode. Flash always fires. There are several threads on this if you search.

Thanks that is disappointing on TTL S&S says it supported but guess they are full of it.

I just tested with 1/64 but got massive over exposure, but at least it fired right :/ thanks.

Thanks I did do a thread search but didn't get a good match, dose the issue follow the S&S or the camera? Wondering what a cheap switch out would be that works with the ds-TTL?

Here are some threads on the subject.

Here is what I decided to try on my last trip. This was gleaned from the posts above and worked very well for me.

For macro, starting setting is iso100, M mode F8, 1/160, macro on, force flash at 1/64 or 1/16 with YS-01 in M mode, for YS-01 select the second M setting (before TTL), strobe power depend on the distance.

For WA, starting iso200, M mode, F5.6, 1/90 macro off; force flash at 1/64 or 1/16; use strobe to control your fg, same as above, adjust power according to distance, but usualy I put at 75% as starting point. Adjust ISO if required but not above 400.

I started with these settings and adjusted the strobe setting if the exposure was off.

Here is a link to my pics from the trip.

Thanks folks, I'll mess around with it, guess I'm doomed to manual mode.

Herb, on the flash modes in the camera do you use slow sync and which sync mode 1 or 2?

It says possible, it's the dsttl2 that is impossible. Though so far popular oppionion is that this lies and everyone shoots manual :(

You might want to check about the firmware on the YS-01. I know there is an issue with older YS-110alpha and version1 of firmware (pre 2011 release) and it looks like the compatibility chart shows a note "7" for the YS-01
