the person who posted on travel notes about the security guard murder sited the 21 feb issue of dario news as the source. is that a local paper down there?
i asked a buddy what he recalled about a body discovered next to scc. his recollection was that it was not the q.r. gov's body but that the body was found on the then gov's property. he recalls we heard the story from a retired l.a.p.d. guy living on the island at the time.

There was a night guard murdered at the Mercardo (it was in Por Esto, last week I think... ) The story indicated it was likely a retaliation. The guard was beaten and robbed I think in the past and provided info that got the offenders put in jail. They got out recently.

In all seriousness, if anyone looks up murder/drug/crime stats for south Florida and compares that by population to a place like Cozumel, it's a miracle that Disney, Universal and all the other attractions there (FL) are still in businesses.

OK...I DID hear about this...but I hadn't heard that he was murdered...I just heard the part about him gettingbeat up.

Still...see how this story got so twisted around?

I'm sorry, but what does this have to do with the Marine park???

What I meant is that I have friends there on the island that are in meetings with the local government authorities from time to time and would probably know if something like that happened. Nothing to do with the Marine Park. Sorry about that.

Actually it was in Dario on Feb 21 and Por Esto on Feb 22

Here is the story from Por Esto with picture........

Victor Robledo

COZUMEL, February 21 .- murdering a sexagenarian, who served as night watchman in Cozumel Municipal Market, during the early hours of Saturday. The Municipal Police found the victim now gagged and tied hand and foot. The State Judicial Police to close the edition did not know who could be the perpetrator, but the inquiries and investigations undertaken.

The commander of the PJE, Mario Gongora Reyes, reported that about 3:40 in the morning hours of Saturday, received the report from the Central Security Service, which in the Municipal Market was a person injured males.

With immediate elements of the State Judicial Police, moved to 25th Street with Adolfo Rosado Salas, andalusia andalusia arrive instead found that the Red Cross paramedics attending to a person who was lying on the floor, as presented a cut of about seven inches deep in the right forearm, which for a lot of blood was found lying unconscious and even tried to resuscitate the person of 65 years of age who lives in the name of Moses responded Cannula Magla no longer showed signs of life.

It is worth mentioning that the first to reach the crime scene, were municipal police officers on board the 7134 patrol, commanded by Candelario Valencia Ortega, who said that when they received the report of the plant on a distress call came andalusia Municipal Market, down from the patrol and went down a hallway and that was only overcome a lock, so you were looking for in the dark until they found one person who complained and beat his body against a metal curtain in order to draw attention, as the eyes and mouth were tied with cloth, also the feet and both hands tied with a cloth shirt.

Seeing this municipal officers tried to help him, cutting the strings of cloth that was tied up with the body, once you removed the cloth from the eyes and mouth, the now deceased merely ask for water, then fell unconscious and when the paramedics arrived and found that he had no vital signs.

It should be noted that unofficial sources announced that Don Cannula Magla Moses had already experienced a similar situation a few years ago, when it was tied hand and foot and gagged the mouth, when subjects in one of the stolen jewelry in front of the Municipal Market, but in that time things did not go to higher authorities and succeeded in capturing the criminals through the cooperation of the pedestal.

However, although there were no names of those who were arrested at that time was rumored that after several years prisoners were in jail, subjects reported by Don Moses at the time, recently completed his sentence and left prison just two or three months, so they could have returned to take revenge on the worker's Municipal Marketplace.

DIVECOZUMEL... posting the photos the Mexican papers choose to include in their stories is really not necessary. No need for that here.

OK, we have gone from the governor being murdered and wrapped in a rug to somebody discovered on property owned by the governor, assuming we can trust the memory of somebody who heard it from somebody else who was not himself involved. No one else seems to know much about it, though. Apparently it didn't make the papers.

The fact that we are scrambling so very, very hard to find something, anything, to justify fear speaks volumes.

I live in Boulder, Colorado, a city regularly listed among the top places in the U.S. in which to live by various magazines. I can cite a bunch more crimes than that which are perfectly verifiable in the last year alone. Right now I am in Cozumel, and I am very much afraid the wind will kick up before my twinight double header dives.

Look up "hearsay" or "rumor" in the dictionary, and you'll find something like this used as an example.

not justifying fear. saying it is not good to deny facts. you will note that i said i still intend to travel there. if i had real fear, i would not be going. the u.s state dept, newt gingrich, and 60 minutes have all spoken about the danger. does that mean it is sure to happen? no. does it mean there is a legitimate need to keep on top of things rather than play ostrich? yes.
i recall similar concerns about quebec back in the 70's and 80's. thankfully, nothing ever happened.
at one time i worked in the international div of a major u.s. corp and frequently traveled to areas of concern. i always kept track of what was going on.
it make sense to be aware of what is happening to one of near neighbors. also to think about what our nation's role is in providing the demand for drugs and the weapons used by gangsters. mexico provides the dope and the gangsters but we provide the $ and assault weapons which often outspend and outgun the mex authorities.
the newspaper story does not look like the "ridiculous" imagination of some poster on another board or just a beating to me btw.
over reaction is not called for. being in denial is not either.

Well any of us that own businesses, especially SCUBA related meet with and talk with "local government authorities" frequently...that doesn't mean that any of us would "probably know" if something like this happened...especially the Marine Park. The Marine park is a government agency, but not a law enforcement agency, so my point was that meeting with the marine park does not make anyone privy to any information nor does it make anyone "special."

If anyone wants to know how safe Mexico is this story will tell you. The chairman of the joint cheifs of staff just landed in Mexico to address the concerns of out of control drug gangs. They do not want it spilling over into the USA and................
this is the best part of the story............they say that HEZBOLLAH is in Latin America and if they work into Mexico it will be a BIG problem for us. That news story that was just aired on CNN just killed tourism in Mexico. You think you are going to get any tourists if we find out Hezbollah soldiers are there?
