There are *many* threads on this in the I2I forum. Some PADI instructors can't get their heads around the fact it is possible to interpret standards without violating them. Some only teach the way they were taught. Anyway, of topic, sorry.

The most recent one is pretty interesting, BTW.
I still want to stay out of it, but it's interesting.

Blatant hijack . . .

Rick Inman:
I took the class with TSandM back in '05 and still haven't passed.

Off topic, but are you ever going to make another trip over here so we can actually dive TOGETHER? I'll even buy you oysters again, if that's what it takes . . .

b1country, could be so kind as to provide the link?

I assist an OW instructor who's always asking me to wear "rec" gear to "look more like the students". I tell him that I'm a shining example of what they will look like in the future :D.

It's SO wierd how this has never happened! Even one of my regular dive buddies has dived with you. I meet a guy in Hawaii to dive with, and HE has many dives with you.

By the time we dive together again you'll be a GUE instructor and maybe you can give me a fundies pass.

Of course, HWY90 goes both ways. :D

This is in the I2I forum, so not everyone will be able to see it:

It's mostly bickering, but kinda fun to read.

It's funny, my instructors have the opposite view. They encourage me to wear my backplate, long hose, and I wear doubles for the open water weekend. Their point is that it's good to let the students see as many brands, types, and gear configurations as possible. I do a lot of 'splainin about how my gear isn't that much different than theirs, from an operational standpoint.

That's refreshing! I think the instructor that I was referring to is more intimidated with the gear than the students!!!

Yeah, I've had the opposite experience as well. My last instructor told me that a BP was unsafe, and was constantly pulling the mask off underwater "looking for the snorkel." I forgot to change out my long hose for one pool session, and he wrote to the director of PADI about "appropriate gear". The PADI director agreed with him. Interesting email exchange that was.
