Ah, but an insurance company facing a half million in claims that has to justify keeping a staff of lawyers ready at moments notice and that has to pay them whether they are busy or not is very interested. It is amazing how good those guys are at digging up stuff.

A couple of years ago we had a poster that was a bit of a pain and someone on the board, I can't remember who did a quick search on the net and posted all sorts of details including name address and social network profiles about the guy. I sent them a pm and asked them to do the same on me and in less than 5 minutes they came back with a list of correct info about me. And my real name isn't USBB either, but they found it out. Does anyone remember who it was that did that? It was they guy who kept flaming John Chatteron all the time that the search was run on.

You should tell the CIA about that guy, he might be useful in tracking down Bin Laden.

So, if you aren't here to listen... and you're not in a position to add value to others... then what is your motivation for being here? And why do you ask questions when you don't want answers?

Im sorry you feel that way about all those points.

This thread asked a very specific question about a completely separate topic. I am not the one who has steered it, or other threads, onto the rocks

I do feel that way. It comes across as though you feel that you are better informed that the host of professionals who work in the dive industry and medicine, which is a ludicrous proposition given your relative inexperience in scuba diving.

You are entitled to your own opinions, and your choices are your own. However, do not expect to recieve any validation for those choices on this forum.

Earlier in this thread, I attempted to give you some valuable advice about the relationship between your medical condition and the validity of your insurance for scuba diving. You made light of that advice. I then attempted to give you further reasoned information, which explained why and how an insurance company would have access to your medical information following treatment for a scuba injury. You flippantly made light of that also.

If this is your reaction to any advice you're are given on the forum, then I don't undertand why you are here?

The name on my birth cert is not "Skydiver" and Im sure law enforcement has better things to be doing than pursuing a scuba diver who did not reveal history of a medical condition. Everything else is hypothetical and has not happened yet.

And Im wondering about the basis for subpoena in a civil suit across two different jurisdictions.
If one of those jurisdictions is in fact Florida there might be.

Different scenario entirely but have you seen the thread involving the defamation lawsuit SB is currently involved in? http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/sc...-gundi-holm-sues-scuba-board-101-members.html

The Plaintiff owns a Austrian?-based operation that books liveaboards in the Maldives. Yet they're suing SB - a Florida based corporation. And her lawyer is in SoCal IIRC. Can't get much more multi-jurisdictional than that. Her lawyer didn't find it nauseating.

Are you sure no one in your family wouldn't be tempted - some distant 2nd cousin or someone? Technically it could be your Skyba buddy suing for future lost income since you were the genius behind the skyba concept that you were both going to market worldwide - hey it could happen - I'd try it once. I mean whoever thought jumping out of a perfectly good airplane could be so popular?

Maybe you thought too much about 1984 mentioned in another thread.
And maybe you're ignorant of today's reality - but let's not stoop to personal insults ok? Although I have no idea what thread you're referring to...

You're right that this is all hypothetical and theoretical until something happens. But you have to admit that attempting a "skyba" dive does increase that likelihood over someone who does 60' DM accompanied rec. dives.

I just tried to point out some fallacies in your arguments. Whether you choose to accept them or not is your option. I won't waste any more of your - or my time.

I'm gona put my two cents in on this one.

A buddy of mine loans and sells gear and then somewhat shows them how to use it and sends them off on their way!
I have never liked his practice of this and wonder how he has not gotten someone killed!
and all he has to say is they know what they are doing none of his concern.

So to anyone out their thinking of just getting gear and books and just going diving DONT its not 1950!

I understood that forums were about having discussion and talking about specific points on both sides of a given topic. I dont have some blanket reaction to every piece of advice I'm given, nor do I dismiss your points.

I didnt think the point about my insurance validity was relevant in a thread which was asking a very general question about divers who receive training from a less conventional route or who are self-taught. I did not make any personal reference to either my diving or my health, and have been made aware of other divers feelings of discontent several times in the "can't swim" thread. I already stated that I would probably seek a medical evaluation earlier today.

My buddy would be equally involved in the skyba venture. In effect if he took a lawsuit, he would be suing himself also. He hates lawyers too.

Just to interject an answer to the OP's question.

The training materials are readily available on the internet, as is equipment from a dive shop. Do such individuals learn from friends, who are not necessarily dive professionals?

Actually the training materials on the internet are better than the material I used in '63to learn to dive. My dad checked me out to dive since it was his gear and he wanted it back. The divers I knew then were trained in a similar manner. I dove from then to '80 without a c-card.

There is no law governing scuba certification. You can buy all your gear and a compressor then dive all you want without a card. Also there are LP hookah rigs which can provide air at recreational depths without the use of HP air or tanks.

Now if you want to buy fills or boat dives or vacation dive trips, they can and will require formal certification, but not because of any law.

Hi,

It seems to be recognised as reality as on my insurance policy it states "We must agree with any equivalent qualification. If you do not hold a qualification, We will only cover you to dive to a depth of 60 feet"

Also what is the situation with commercial divers who would have vast experience. Surely they are proficient going much deeper than 60 feet - do they have insurance options while not holding a c-card.

Also my insurance policy covers 100 feet for holder of advanced open water card. It specifically states that and nothing else.

I wonder what the situation when training for AOW. Was my insurance not valid on deep dive to 100 feet - I was only covered to 60 feet with my OW card and had not yet received or completed the AOW certification. From what I can see there does not seem to be provision for training dives, I might call them to enquire about this.

I didnt think the point about my insurance validity was relevant in a thread which was asking a very general question about divers who receive training from a less conventional route or who are self-taught. Umm you were the one who brought up your insurance coverage in post 1 of the thread and continued to mention it.
