If you walk into a dive shop, and ask for something very specific and DIR, the way to avoid derision, is to know exactly WHY you need this specific item....the answer should not be that it was what your instructor wanted you to get, or that GUE tells me I need this....You should be able to explain why the item needs to be a stainless steel bolt snap, or why whatever other very specific criteria must be met......If you have a good reason, NO dive Shop should be able to give you a hard time, or even want to.

A list compiling all the likely items and specifics with explanations of the why's, would probably be a good GUE material to be created and passed around.

While I think it's a good approach, I think a better one is just not to play that game.

When I walk into a grocery store and buy a sack of potatoes, does the store manager want to know why I picked Russets instead of Idaho Golds?

If a dive shop owner asks me to explain why I want to purchase a specific item, my most likely response is going to be in the form of a question ... "Do you want my money ... or not?"

...........//........My question is: so what?.....//.....It makes no sense to take offense to the term in any context,....//.....or bands (The Righteous Brothers :D).

Next, we'll be hatin' on the Righteous Brothers. :D

That ties it, I'm taking GUE something just so I can play here too!

-at least you guys have a sense of humor. How does one go from "not quite right" to DIR???

Thats just because there are no grocery store workers that are nearly as helpful as dive shop workers. Plus, there are not potato cults

Probably true..the not playing the game issue.....but one of the things GUE should make clear are the WHY'S of everything they do.....A diver with really good training understands why they do what they do....aND WHY their gear is configured a certain way.

I remember walking into dive shops with George Irvine in the late nineties, and him asking for various items....if a store owner questioned him, George would give them a spectacular answer on the reasons for anything, and the owner would typically be appreciative of the explanations. The same would sometimes happen on a charter boat...a recreational diver would ask why the long hose wrapped around your neck, or why the wing instead of BC, and so on...George would obviously never say " because WKPP makes me do this..." George would give them so many compelling reasons that many probably went out later and changed what they were using :)

If it must to be an "either - or" of those 2 options, then I'm in trouble :D

You know, I've been asked at EE before why I bought xx item, and they've informed me of a competing item that had benefits I wasn't aware of. To reply with "Do you want my money ... or not?" seems rather quick tempered and insecure in your buying decision.

Tim, as this thread is remaining far more intelligent than another notable one, I'll offer http://www.frogkick.nl/files/george_irvine_dir_articles.pdf as the historical gem that alienated GI3. -scan down to the baker's dozen. Back to "reading the mail."

This is pretty innocuous IMO. He addresses many points and only makes fun of "st**es" a little bit. I think NWGratefulDiver was referring to (correct me if I am wrong) the internet message forums of yesteryear where he told lots of people they were idiots and were going to die. He also suggested explanations to some unfortunate events that was, even with the most innocent interpretation, callous.

If those articles in that frogkickdiving article series offend you, I wouldnt suggest looking for the message board stuff.

I routinely question my customers about their purchases. I'm in the problem solving business and I can't help when I don't know what problem the customer is trying to solve.

Most appreciate this, a very few "grenade" when asked about virtually anything. I've always found this odd.

Both Brando and JoeT did a great job of explaining the "why" of every piece of equipment we were wearing in Fundies. And you're right ... a good instructor will do that. Doesn't even have to be a GUE class. When I took my cave class, my instructor went over all the equipment I brought with me, and how I configured it, and asked me to explain why I was using it that way. He expected a good answer ... and "because that's how I was taught to do it" did not constitute a good answer. Thankfully ... in part because Brando and JoeT both did such a good job ... I was able to supply one.
