Having used both a 5 ft and 7 ft hose many times, I strongly recommend that you use the 5 ft hose for OW diving as you are intending. It's much more comfortable and streamlined than tucking in the extra 2 ft.

It really depends on body size. I find the 5' hose too short. I've heard others say the same also.

Same here, I purchased a 5' hose to try and found unless I really root it up tight under my right arm it pulls in my mouth.

Which is why I offer a six footer as an option on some of the setups I sell. A few bigger people have gone that route and been very happy with it.

A funny thing has happened to me.... For the past year (120 dives) I've dove a 7' hose and been perfectly happy with it.

Until the last couple dives. I've noticed it's about a foot too long for me. It wants to flop across my torso or ride up behind my neck.

Now I've lost 28lbs and a couple inches around the waist and problem more on my back.... could that be in? It's hard for me to consider the hose routing and what effect weight loss would have.

I used to wrap it around my shears and it would be fine. Now I have to tuck it in my webbing half way down my thigh to keep it tight.

So do I go to a 6' or switch to 4' and change my routing to under the arm pit.

Congrats on your BPW.

I recently switched to a BPW but made the MISTAKE of getting an Apeks WTX "deluxe" type harness with quick releases, chest straps, back plate pad, quick release weight pockets and God only knows what other crap that I didn't need. I had tried a regular hog harness but I could barely get it on correctly and before I knew it the shop had "upgraded" me.

I've since learned how to adjust a hog style harness and have minimilized everything. I've got a 32# Apeks wing that seems waaay to big for my needs. I'll probably buy a 23# HOG wing from Jim LaPenta soon.

I really gotta sell all my extra crap that I was told I needed. One of these days I'll post it on Craigslist or something.

hmmm... interesting thoughts on the 5' vs 7'... i think we're average height (5'10" and 5'11"), slim built... should the 5' be good for my height?

I really wish i had somebody who practices DIR or at least long hose configuration locally that i could check, the best i can do is prolly use 5' of my garden hose and route it to determine if it would be sufficient.

What i really like about bp/w and dir styles is the minimalist approach, and having a 7' may defeat the purpose if i don't require the extra length but i still have to worry about stowing it... if anybody fits my build, let me know how the 5' works for you.

cb5150- Sorry to hear. I get that some people have preferences and/or bad shoulders but far too often I hear people be told to go down the KISS route and they end up getting detoured. Sorry you'll have to sell/buy to get back on track.

As for the 32lb, unless you need to sell it to sell the other harness, you are probably fine with it. That's not massive compared to some.

if you have a spare hose or two, duct tape them together and use it as a measure guide (that way you get a better way to feel how the hoses will bend... but yes, you could just use some garden hose to get the measurement...

good idea... a that rate i can just use one of my 40" and duct tape it to the old 32" that i had on my primary... just adjust for length and route... thanks.. will do that and see how it routes

I recently tried out a rig with a 5-foot hose, and I don't like the way the hose loops so tightly around my neck and seems to want to torque the reg out of my mouth. In a couple of weeks I'm going to have the opportunity to get some hands-on help in GUE Primer class, so I'm not concerned yet. It's possible I don't have things adjusted correctly. I'm only 5'8" tall, and I've never heard of someone of my modest stature feeling that a 5-foot hose is too short. I can't imagine myself using a 7-foot hose for purely recreational diving.
