Hi all,

I'm going to Cozumel on July 29th for a week. Unfortunately, this past Monday I tore my peroneal tendon in my ankle. I'm in a brace full time and I was wondering what my chances were of making the trip? Any waterproof ankle braces that could fit under dive boots? I have the lightweight, open-heel Mares Xstream fins so maybe the brace should be enough? I would take my equipment off in the water and hand it to the boat crew before getting back on the boat.

If the tendon is torn and not merely strained, I wouldn't even try it. Tendons heal very slowly -- they are poorly vascularized. The peroneal tendon is important to the proper function of the ankle and foot. You do not want it to fail to heal.

It's definitely torn: had a MRI done and am in a cast now. I can't get my money back so I have to try to go, even if it means I dive with only one foot or frog kick everything. I'm thinking the drift diving makes this possible?

Forget it. You will outlive this acute disappointment and years later walk away from it whole. Stay topside, find something else to do. Supposed to be a nice place, no?

I've been to Cozumel before and there is absolutely nothing else I want to do there. I would be going with a group of divers and I would essentially be alone staying topside while they all dive. It's simply not an option. I can't just lose $2,000.

I understand your problem, but you should also consider that if any emergency occurs you won´t be in a position to address it correctly. You may become a liability to your dive partner, not to mention that you also won´t be able to help him in an emergency.

Can you imagine if you get lost and you both surface far from the boat? Or if you have to tow your partner? A failure in your BCD? Personally I would not dive with a partner in your condition.

Safe diving!

Can you find someone to buy your spot? Talk to the trip organizer they may be able to help. Did you buy trip/travel insurance for the trip?

Permanent damage is not worth one week of diving.

Also so consider that your injury may end up putting other divers/people at risk if your injury requires them to assist you if you are or become unable to swim or reenter the boat.

Another potential problem you will have to address is will a dive op even accept you.
