I have always said that any dive I do with my husband is a better dive than one without him. I guess I feel that way about pretty much anything. To me it is always more enjoyable if we do it together. I like to get underwater hugs and we sometimes hold hands just for the fun of it. I seldom need to hold anybody's hand as I take pride in being a self sufficient and competent diver.

He has said for years that he enjoys diving without me sometimes because he feels a bit more relaxed and doesn't "worry" about other dive buddies as much. I told him a number of years ago that I didn't understand why he felt that way because I am a competent diver and don't feel it is necessary for anyone to "worry" about me. A while ago my husband had to conduct a search and rescue of another diver. The experience was pretty traumatic for him. Now I understand what he meant because it is now me who is double checking and "worrying" about him when we dive together.

I would still rather dive with hubby than anyone else. We have similar interests, similar gas consumption but we are a bit unusual in that I am much more keen to dive than he is.

Looks like you found a happy medium.
There many things that help bring us closer and sharing a diving experience with a spouse I believe is one of them.

Under water hugs!
My wife would love them, must try!

I do enjoy diving with my spouse - we as instructors made a great team, as for recreational - she travels slow and locates interesting creatures, she is my dive buddy and great one at that I trust her with my life - she logs every dive and notes every creature we see, me on the other hand, notate the dive and in the comments field I simply state 'ABUNDANT SEA LIFE - see pictures - ask wife for the names". We dive Monterey every month and our vacations for the year Abroad are only dive vacations - just can't get enough or see enough.

We are pretty balanced. He writes more about conditions and navigation. I do more about critters. He is good at general navigation and compass navigation. I am really good at finding things and navigate by landmark and the territory of the critters.

I know it sounds crazy but I tend to recognize the fish in our more common dive sites and know their territories. When viz is bad I can get an idea of where I am by what fish I see. :)

Funny thing is that one of the things I like about diving is nobody talks! I am known to be quite talkative and I talk for a living but I love going somewhere that nobody talks!

It is so nice to have a buddy that you just mess with. No effort, no stress you just "know" where they will be and how they will react. I do know one other diver that is like that with us. Such a delight to dive with good buddies and even better to share something so special with the person you share your life with!

My Wife and I dive together.
When we do...I'm usually holding her hand; She's a new diver.

When we are not diving...I'm usually holding her hand; that never gets old. :)

You know sometimes its good to pause and take another look at how we feel about things.
In my case I said that my wife likes to hold my hand most of the the time. I said that it bugged me some and it did because of what I was focusing on," MY DIVE".
Reading some of these posts made me realize what I was really missing out on. I am really glad I got a chance to see this. It made me rethink of how I can become better. Showing affection and closeness is a great way to strengthen a marriage, why not do it while your diving!

I am actually looking forward to our next dive. You better believe that I will be the one to reach out for her hand, and I also want to be able to say it never gets old.

I guess sometimes we need inspiration from others to help see what we ourselves can do better. I think it would have been doubtful if I would have discovered this on my own.

Thanks to all those hand holders that chimed in, I owe this one to you!

Great post!! I LOVE diving with my wife (or anything, for that matter...). I actually taught her to dive, and it was a fabulous experience. I often go without her (It is part of my business) but it is always better when she comes along. She likes going to shallow water (5-10 meters) and snorkeling while I scuba below. She gets a kick out of watching me show off my acrobatic "skillz" underwater - just like I used to show off when I was courting her 26 years ago. It keeps us young, at least in our own minds:) (Yes, I said "skillz." My niece informed me that mask clearing, for example, is a 'skill,'... but doing pinwheels, somersaults, and fin-splits are "skillz."

My favorite trip ever (there have been many) was in 2010 - Me and my wife took our 2 nieces to Cozumel...They had just turned 18 & 20, and reminded me that when they were 10 & 12 I told them I'd teach them to dive when they were old enough to travel overseas. Funny what sticks in a child's mind!!

They got their passports and we went to the Villa Blanca / Scuba Mau for 12 days. Did the OW/AOW cert courses, then taught them to be buoyancy masters. Jenni, my wife, was the equipment quartermaster. Best courses I ever taught, Best students I ever had!!

And, yes, we love to take selfies. My arm is just long enough... In fact, an 'undersurface' selfie with snorkels was the cover of our marriage renewal of vows (at 20 years) invitations.

Why don't you really delight her and try an underwater hug as well. I agree hand holding too much can be a bit restrictive during a dive but those hugs will surprise and delight... trust me :flowers:

You guys are awesome!

Definitely love to hear how one can do things that add a special touch, to show a loved one what they mean to them.

All I can say is, WOW!! You really hit that one out of the park!

For Valentine's Day, I bought my wife a new computer. Of course, I got another for myself, just so we can be sure our computers are doing the same thing, of course--it's all about safety.

For Valentine's Day I bought my wife (divebuddy) and I matching (Doc's) pocket loupes (ok, I'm cheap) for our upcoming trip to Bonaire. Our diving universe should expand...according to Doc...:D
