    split vs non

I do technical diving (trimix) and usually dive with steel doubles (and if needed 40 cuft Al stages). I tried some Scubapro split fins and was impressed. They are what I usually use with most of my diving. They are different from Jets and there is a learning curve. Try them and see if you like...

What regulator do you guys recommend for deep water?

Like everyone else has said," my dog is the best dog because he is MY dog!". I use SP because the LDS sell it. They also sell apex and a bunch of others. It is whatever you feel comfortable with. If you cannot get a reg serviced or the shop is not a dealer and does not want to service it...

    Lift BAG VS sIGNAL sAUSAGE

I use an OMS 9' 7" "sausage" it is a SMB that really stands out. It is a bright orange. I have been on a dive where a diver drifeted off and it was incredibly difficult to see his lift bag (which was a yellow). At the time the seas were white capping and the difference between the yellow and the...

    virginia beach?

Well, if you are up to a 3 hour car ride, you can drive down to Hatteras Island and go out there www.outerbanksdiving.com. The water will be significantly warmer 70's and the vis is usually 70+. There are a lot of tropical fish, sharks, rays and turtles. Robert

All about Oxygen O2 Analyzers, including DIY

I have an Oxyspy and the local dive shop that I deal with mainly has switched to one also. It is easy to use on a rocking boat. The battery and sensor are easy to replace when they are done. Robert:doctor:

Looking for advice for 1st bp/wings purchase

Jamei: since you are sorta tall 6'2", you might want to look at Abysmal www.abysmal.com for a bp. They make them in 3 sizes, and the large one may be a better fit to your frame. Robert:doctor:

    OMS hot dipped galvinized cylinders...

From what I understand, (I asked my father Ph.D. chemistry) that either spraying or hot dipping, if done correctly, will give a good result. It is not that one is necessarily superior to the other. The old OMS tanks were spray galvanized, the an epoxy primer is applied, then an polyurethane...

    Split fins ??

I have a pair of TwinJets that I bought 2 yrs ago. Prior to that I was using SP Sea wings. (I decided that I liked them better than the JetFins). When I first used the TwinJets, it was on a wreck (the Eureka) that usually has a stong current. I was amazed that I was able to move into the current...

    Rodales 10 best "tech" dives

I agree that they are remiss in not suggesting trimix trainning. some of the dives off of NC can be easily done with a 30% mix. The depths on the Papoose and U352 are in the sand and do not represent the normal profile of those dives. Robert:doctor:

    Light or Tanks?

I would vote on a light. You might also look at the Abysmal and Sartek lights. Robert:doctor:

Weekday dives, Summer in Virginia beach

There are a some dives in the middle of the week with LDC. As far as Nags Head goes, there is a dive shop there, but they don't have a boat. They had one chartered there, but I don't think it is still there. A 3 hr drive will put you into Hatteras Village and there is a great dive shop...

how do you select a wing?

You do need to determine how much lift your rig will need without you in it. If you have to take off you rig to get back into a boat and then haul your rig up into the boat, you would not want it to sink. Robert:doctor:

    I think I'm converted

I can suggest to you that Abyssmal backplates come in different sizes, if that makes a difference. I don't know how large or small you are, but they give you a choice. Robert:doctor:

External rust, stripping & painting steel tanks

I have not seen where "hot dip" is better than being sprayed. I have seen where the heat of a hot dip may be bad for the steel in terms of its strength. When a metal is made, there are grains in it. Heating a metal such as steel can disrupt these grains change its physical properties. The...

    Deep Diving

It depends on what you are comfortable with doing. Obviously, the deeper you go, the more gas (and training) you will need. I like the 200+ range. 300+ requires a lot of Helium and stage bottles. I usually dive with dbl 98s and two 40 stages. Going 400 to 500+ is a lot of work! Robert:doctor:

    cenotes

When we were in Cozumel, we asked around and found one of the divemasters was cave cert. He arranged to meet us at the ferry to Playa del Carmen and had a Suburban waiting for us. He and another guy (driver) loaded our gear. Went to a dive shop and they loaded the tanks. Went to Cenote Chac Mol...
