Another website is reporting that these are the missing divers:

The eight missing divers were identified as Hung Yu-sheng, 29; Ting Po-ling, 32; Wang Chih-yu, 25; Wang Shun-ping, 28; Tu Ting-chang, 38; Kuo Chun-hsien, 38; Lee Su-ling, 44; and Liu Hui-chun, 28.

That whole story was bad news right from the beginning. The guy who dropped them off was brand new and after dropping them he left the site. When he came back and couldn't find them after searching for severals hours, only then did he report it. One of the women left some notes on her wrist slate before she died. Some of the bodies were recovered when a C-130 out of Guam finally spotted them. Very sad.

Diver Dennis,

You are right about a bad news story from the get go. I was living in Japan then and my wife (who is Japanese) was able to translate the news stories for me. She was alive for 48+ hours from what they could tell from the notes and times on the girl's slate. Plus

- the boat and driver weren't regular dive shop employees. Rather a day charter because this group hadn't originally been scheduled to dive Peleliu Corner that day and all of the dive shop's boats were full.
- the DM wasn't a regular dive shop employee and he wasn't familiar with Peleliu Corner
- the boat had only a single engine for a dive outside the barrier reef and the dive was at what can be probably the hairiest dive in Palau
- no radio on the boat

The whole thing was just an accident waiting to happen and unfortunately it did.

Yeah Rick, I've been there several times and some friends there told me the boatman actually left the site too. It certainly was an accident waiting to happen. It really made me think about an EPIRB.

and a night recovery is out of the question
Maybe its just my ignorance but wouldn't this be the best time to try and find them considering some might be carrying strobes or lights?

Where did you read that a night recovery is out of the question? I do agree with your thoughts that someone may be carrying a light, which would obviously aid in finding them at night.

Dennis,

Yep, an EPIRB is something I've considered on more than one occasion but haven't made the leap yet.
