I have never had a freeflow problem witha 3rd gen. AIR2. You may have an older one, it may have been serviced incorrectly.

By the way, I'd like to see a thread on how many owners of air2s have a slight freeflow. My wife's doesn't last very long between services and many of my customers are often bothered by their "leaks" from this piece of equipment.
This is a sure sign of a poor rebuild. Some techs get lazy and replace the obvious parts like the seats but not the small red o-ring that seals the orifice in the air inlet tube. If you don't change this o-ring, a very slight but persistent o-ring is virtually inevitable. So blame the tech(s) involved, not the design.

Otherwise it is a robust and very simple downstream design that shares the same seat as the R190 and when properly adjusted, offers comparable performance. I do about 130- 150 dives per year and when I used an Air 2, I used to go a couple years without servicing my Air 2 with no problems.
