A Less Strenuous Surface Swim

Long surface swim out: Take the gear off, ride on the gear, or push it ahead, and free dive now and then to relieve boredom.

Long 'surface swim' back: swim underwater as long you can, because swimming underwater is usually way more efficient and you have done the dive so you don't have to conserve air for the dive anymore.
 
I will usually swim face down on my snorkel. This allows my face to get used to the water temp. On the return swim, I will stay on air. I pay for a fill, regardless of how empty I give it to them.

If the conditions do not permit this, I will swim on my back.
