I am a member of the AAUS working for the University of Washington.

Diving for science can be a blast, I spent 2 months last winter diving in the arctic and I will be diving in Florida for a couple of months later this year.

I personally love it. Check the AAUS website for becoming certified to dive under the AAUS auspices. I don't think you need to be affilitated with a specific university or other to become an AAUS diver but I may be wrong.

I do know that you can dive with any AAUS goverend facility by submitting a qualified reciprocity agreement.

One interesting note is that most Grad students I have met that need divers become divers to perform their work and don't seem to need anyone else to help them much.
