... Does anyone have any comments or opinions regarding whether this method of exhaling through the nose has any merit in extending the bottom time?
No, but it will fill your mask with snot if you do it long enough
 
Do less work:
1. Streamline
2. Boyancy
3. Different kicks (maybe)
4. Trim (see #2)
5. Scooter (still waiting to finance that portion of my recommendation)

Never heard the nose breathing thing. I know it's an occasional problem with students when they do no mask drills but never heard of issues other than that. I do clear my mask a lot, probably time to replace it, but have never notices an increase in fogging and most of my diving has been in water <40 deg.
