I normally dive in low vis conditions 2-5m. On a scenic dive I like the buddy parallel with the shoulder about a arms length away, where I can eyeball glance check systematically in the breathing cycle or keep aware of their position through their torch beam. I have dived with many people who dont check, IMO they don't make good dive companions.
