If you were at the Great Pinnacle in Bluefish, the resident male Sheepshead is named
Victor. Sheepshead change gender from female to male as they age, so it's
Victor / Victoria. Victor will show up on most dives there.

Hmmm, the large male sheephead in Catalina's Casino Point Dive Park is called Oscar I, Oscar II or Oscar III (depending on which one you have seen). In the days when (t)he(y) was a she, was (t)he(y) called Oscaretta?

According to the REEF database Garibaldis have been sited during surveys near Monterey on a few occasions but sitings are rare.

They probably saw it on the side of the duck :)

When one discusses the range of a species, it usually includes all verified sightings (including the Monterey area) but usually with a disclaimer that individual sightings may be unusual (as in El Nino years) or some other qualifier such as "but rare above Pt. Conception."

I know that the Garabaldi is the Ca state salt water fish, what's the state's freshie?

For a while, mercifully ending in the spring of 2005, IIRC, Monterey was afflicted with a
couple of amphibious tour busses. The were loud, smelly, blocked traffic, thought they
owned the launch ramp (which, BTW, is not to be used for any "for hire" purposes), and
had a Garibaldi in the kelp forest "painted" on their sides. The Garibaldi made them subject
of much derision by the local divers. Fortunately they are gone (to Santa Barbara, I
heard).

Anyway, they were called "ducks", which is a reference to the WW II DUKW amphibious
truck (http://www.dukw.com/, google DUKW for more).
